Seizing the weekend

Waitangi weekend.  Amazing weather.  6 peoples, one beautiful yacht.
Recipe for awesome right there.

We headed out from Auckland on Friday afternoon.  Bailing from work a little early.
Conveniently – and awesomely – one of the crew was our team leader, Kirsty, who was also our chef.

Oh my goodness!  I have never ever eaten so much over such a short period.
“Are you hungry?  I have just made some <bread, chicken, lamb, croissants, jam and bananas and custard> – insert food item that sounds good right here as that is what we had.

We motored up to Kawau Island.
We being me, Captain Jono, Mr Vodka Dan, Grandpa Paul, Kirsty and Shortie Sebastian (Kirsty’s boy).
The sunset over the North Island was amazing – and then the lovely red wine came out.
I was in heaven!!!

Arriving at Kawau, we tucked in to Mansion House Bay.  And I went swimming.
The bay was serene with a few boats tucked in and the water was warm.  Around 21/22 degrees.

Waking up the next morning, checking the forecasts and the tides and the winds, we decided to head around to the western side of Challenger Rock for a dive.  Paul, Dan, Jono and I were diving – and I was using this as a good opportunity to check to see how my shoulder was doing and whether I was ready to get back in the water or not.

I needed to gear up in the water and frankly that was easier anyway.  We dropped all the dive gear off the stern on a line which left the back deck completely free for everyone to move around.  We had briefed Kirsty on our dive “plans” and our emergency signals and so we headed off.  Paul and Dan were diving together and me and Jono.  We were after scallops.  Well actually, we were after a bit of fun really.
So Paul found all the scallops.  Thats the end of that story.  He and Dan sat on the back shucking them.  And then we all ate them that night tucked back into Mansion House Bay.

After dropping Kirsty and Sebastion and Paul back at Gulf Harbour, Jono and Dan and I “sailed” back to Westhaven.
The 10-15 knots never really eventuated.  But who gives a fuck.  It could have been Monday and we could have been at work.  But it wasn’t.  We were out on the water, drinking beer – and then the iPod player started working.  #WIN!

Auckland Anniversary weekend.

I was supposed to be in lake Taupo with Pete and Marty – finishing my TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression – however my shoulder and neck have had other ideas over the past few weeks.

Instead I did 99% of sweet fuck all.  And it was excellent.

Maresa, Jackson and Cossie and I went to the pub on Sunday.  And sat outside in the rain.
Under the biggest umbrella we could find of course.

And then we came back to mine and of course, I had to get the camera out.

Nifty New Nikon – Now!

I’m really not happy with my Nikon – my trusty D80.

It seems somewhere between Auckland and London, unbeknown to me, an accident of some type has occured.
I got to England and on the day of my brothers wedding, I discovered that my 18-135mm lens was broken.  No, not broken, smashed! Smashed to pieces.  And I cried – quite a bit in fact.
Travel insurance said that I dropped it.  And if I wanted my Nikon D80 looked at for a damage report, then it was going to cost me $180.00.  I hate you Southern Cross Travel Insurance – you wankers.

Mom told me to work with what I had.
So the rather noisy, but okay for portraits, Tamron 55-200 came out of retirement and I have been using that while I decide what to do next.

And I am nearly there.Birds and candles outside at the Greytown Cottage
With the amazing Nikon D300 available for around $2900, I am hoping that our dollar will improve just a little more and this price will drop.  However the newly released D300s (with HD video) at $3500 …. well its just a little more isn’t it?
Wonder how the Bank of Mommy would feel if I presented another withdrawal slip.  It would probably slam its doors shut in my face – forever.

This Christmas I will be using the D80 and the 55-200 as much as possible.
To see what I can really do with it.
It is a bit of a challenge but then again, I think its a good exercise to test my composition and my very amateur skills.

Or maybe, I’ll just get a new lens.
